Why it happens

As estrogen declines in perimenopause and menopause, or temporarily after childbirth and during breastfeeding, vaginal tissue becomes thinner, drier and less elastic. Doctors call this genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), formerly vaginal atrophy. It can cause dryness, burning, pain with intimacy, more frequent UTIs and urinary urgency or leaking.

Your options

Moisturizers and lubricants help with mild symptoms. Low-dose vaginal estrogen is a well-studied option for many women. Systemic hormone therapy can help when other menopause symptoms are present. In-office CO2 laser treatment such as MonaLisa Touch stimulates the tissue to rebuild collagen and moisture, and is often chosen by women who prefer to avoid or can't use hormones.

The right choice depends on your symptoms, health history and preferences. Many women combine approaches.
